Best Foreign Language Film. The film is apparently a semi-autobiographical story of the novelist and lead actor Begaudeau.
It’s a shocking moment: Some things were difficult to understand, partly due to the translation, and partly due to not having firsthand knowledge of the culture. Though the book made me sad, I did find truth and a certain comfort in it. The film is demanding of the viewer. But while it follows a teacher and his class for the duration of a school year, there really isn’t a story, and it was pessimistic through to the end.
An unemployed man finds his life sinking more and more into trouble as he hides his situation from his family and friends. The money is terrible and the children – well, children can be so ungrateful.
But there was no sense of mission. Several students get expelled, though not so much for specific infractions but rather their general attitude and lack of respect and for occasionally acting out — though it all seems extraordinarily tame by American public school standards. But it’s an important question. Being a teacher in a Secondary School, I can relate with many experiences and situations described in this book.
